STAR TREK THE ORIGINAL SERIES: Season 2    Blu-Ray

Street Date: September 22, 2009                                       Actors: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy                         Genre: Sci-Fi

REVIEW -  The crew of the Enterprise are now clearer and sharper than ever in this Blu-ray release of the second season of the original show.  They have both the original special effects and the new enhanced effects on the disc, so you can choose which way you want to watch the show.  Here is a top notch use of new Blu-ray technology on an older series...Scotty would be proud!                            4 out of 5 slates!

FRIDAY THE 13th The Series:   The Final Season

Street Date:
September 22, 2009                               Actors: Steve Monarque, Louise Robey                         Genre: Horror, Mystery
REVIEW - Friday The 13th The Series continues into it's final season with bad acting and low production values...you'd think it would have improved from season to season, but no.  This is one of those shows that seemed better when you were a kid, but doesn't hold up well over time.                 2 out of 5 slates!

BROTHERHOOD:  The Final Season

Street Date: September 22, 2009                                       Actors: Jason Isaacs, Jason Clarke                          Genre: Drama

REVIEW -  Here is another Showtime series that is a quality show!  Brotherhood is a well written and well acted show that should continue.  The biggest problem with this and many other Showtime show's is that they have to few episodes each season...this one only has 8 episodes.  If you haven't seen Brotherhood before, do yourself a favor, get all the seasons and enjoy!                             4 out of 5 slates!

GHOST WHISPERER:  The Fourth Season

Street Date: September 22, 2009                                       Actors: Jennifer Love Hewitt, David Conrad                          Genre: Mystery/Drama/Sci-Fi

REVIEW -Ghost Whisperer is a good show for those that like a slice of a ghost storty mixed with a touching theme.  It usually has an uplifting ending.  This season over all may be not quite as strong as previous seasons, but still well done.  It's loading with extras, including an interactive game!  Fun!                                4 out of 5 slates!

CSI MIAMI:  The Seventh Season

Street Date: September 15, 2009                                       Actors: David Caruso, Eve LaRue, Jonathan Togo                          Genre: Crime/Drama
REVIEW - I must admit, I'm not a big fan of the newer crime dramas on TV now...not that I don't like them and not because they are bad, but there are just other things I watch.  But, of course for this review, I sat down and watched this season,,,and I can see why it's been on for 7 seasons.  It's very good.  There is so much going on on this season...drug addiction, betrayal, drama, drama and more drama...and that's all just amongst the the series regulars, never mind each episode's storyline!                     4 out of 5 slates!

ONE STEP BEYOND:  The Official 1st Season

Street Date: September 15, 2009                                       Actors: John Newland                                                 Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy
REVIEW - Here is another show that deserved an appropriate release.  Since it is in public domain, there have been poor quality copies available for a while, but with this release, you finally can see a great picture on a show that has always been considered "less" than the more popular "Twilight Zone", which has been played to death on TV.  "One Step Beyond" is a completely different show, based on true events and really deserves more credit.  Check this old series out...you will not be sorry.                      4 out of 5 slates!

BONANZA:  Season One Volume 1 & Volume 2

Street Date: September 15, 2009                                       Actors: Lorne Greene, Michael Landon, Dan Blocker                   Genre: Action/Western/Adventure

REVIEW - At last! Ben, Adam, Hoss and Little Joe ride on to DVD.  This series has drama and humor mixed into stories that hold your interest.  A strong chemistry among the actors adds to the appeal of the show.  These 2 separate volumes bring you the first full season of one of the best westerns which lasted for fourteen seasons.  Each volume includes some interesting extras.                      4 out of 5 slates!

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: The Ninth Season

Street Date: September 1, 2009                                       Actors: Laurence Fishburne, Marg Helgenberger                   Genre: Crime/Drama

REVIEW - The ninth season of CSI shows why this has been on for nine years.  A quality show with writting and acting that shines!  This team knows what they are doing.  The BluRay is incredible as far as the picture quality.  Special features include deleted scenes and more.                     4 out of 5 slates!

 THE GAME: The FIRST Season

Street Date: September 1, 2009                                                 Actors: Tia Mowry, Colby Bell                                             Genre: Comedy/Drama/Romance

REVIEW - The Game is a spin-off of Girlfriends and I think it's a little better than Girlfriends.  It follows the trials and tribulations of the women behind men in professional football.  A bit uneven, but worth watching.               3.5 out of 5 slates.

CRIMINAL MINDS: The Fourth Season

Street Date: September 8, 2009                                       Actors: A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster, Thomas Gibson                   Genre: Crime/Drama

REVIEW - Here is another well written and acted TV show.  The storylines are solid and this season (Season 4) has to be one of the best for Criminal Minds.  This team of FBI profilers get the work done for true TV entertainment.  Be sure to check out the season finale...wow!  Great show.                      4 out of 5 slates!

HARPER'S ISLAND: The DVD Edition

Street Date: September 8, 2009                                       Actors: Katie Cassidy, Jim Beaver, Elaine Cassidy                   Genre: Mystery/Thriller

REVIEW - Harper's Island is a show that drags you in from the first frame.  It's full of suspense and may not be for the weak of heart!  It's an enjoyable show that lasted only 13 episodes and it is all wrapped up in the end so you are not left hanging.  The DVD has extras that include a gag reel and deleted scenes.                           4 out of 5 slates!

THE UNTOUCHABLES: The Sixth Season

Street Date: August 25, 2009                                       Actors: Robert Stack, Steve London, Bruce Gordon                   Genre: Crime/Drama

REVIEW - Robert Stack is Eliot Ness.  He is the man.  Stack plays Ness as a no nonsense, by the book guy.  No humor, just get in the bad guys face and take them down.  This is a great piece of TV history, loaded with gangsters, twists and turns and action.  You'll see some TV staples show up as guest stars including Peter Falk (Columbo) as a sleazy mobster...he plays it well!  With the small revival of gangster films coming our way from Johnny Depp and others, here is a chance to see how tv handled it back in the day.      4 out of 5 slates!

 NCIS: The Sixth Season

Street Date: August 25, 2009                                       Actors: Mark Harmon, Lauren Holly, Sean Murray                   Genre: Crime/Mystery/Action/Drama

REVIEW - Here is a show that has just about  everything...action, drama, mystery and even a little humor thrown in just to take the edge off.  Of course, this show has a feel of JAG to it, and that's good.  A well done show led by Mark Harmon as Special Agent Gibbs and the crew makes for excellent viewing and loaded with extras.       4 out of 5 slates!

 TV SETS: CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

Street Date: August 25, 2009                                       Actors: Jack Lord, Gary Sinise, Micael C. Hall                    Genre: Crime/Mystery/Action/Adventure

REVIEW - They mixed this set up with two gems from the past and two from today!  From the past we get "The Streets of San Francisco" and "Hawaii-Five-0", while you get to sample "Dexter" and "CSI:NY" from today.  The only "problem" is, it will keep you wanting more!       4 out of 5 slates!

 TV SETS:  BEYOND THE ORDINARY

Street Date:
August 25, 2009                                  Actors: William Shatner, Amber Tamblyn                    Genre: Mystery/Sci-Fi

REVIEW - I like these compilation sets, it gives you a chance to see a mix of shows, sometimes the pilots, and see if you like them.  This set includes an episode of "Star Trek", the pilot of  "4400", "Medium" and "Joan of Arcadia".  Nice mix!   4 out of 5 slates!

CALIFORNICATION: The Complete 2nd Season               Street Date: August 25, 2009                                                   Actors: David Duchovney                                         Genre: Comedy/Drama

REVIEW - Having never seen the first season, I can not compare the two, but this is one funny show!  I explained it to someone as "if you mixed "Sex and the City " and "Two and a Half Men", this is what you would get."  I  laughed alot watching "Californication".  It's naughty, spicy, for adults and funny!  Did I say it was funny?  It is!   The only downside is they made to few episodes per season...can't wait for season 3!...and it's funny!               5 out of 5 slates.

 DEXTER:  The Third Season

Street Date:
August 18, 2009                                       Actors: Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, James Remar                    Genre: Crime, Horror

REVIEW - If you haven't seen this show because you don't have Showtime, you need to check this out!  It's a very captivating show.  It has been nominated for several Emmy's and it's easy to see why.  The Blu-Ray is loaded with extras, too!  Probably the best season yet!   4 out of 5 slates!

ANOTHER REVIEW - Our favorite serial killer is back for more blood in season 3 - and boy is there quite the blood bath! With the pure intensity and awesomeness of season 2 ending (nothing beats the season 2 finale), fans will be ecstatic to see who Dexter has in set his sights on and who has Dexter in their sights as well. Fans will even begin to see a slight change of heart in Dexter, but don't worry he's still got his killing down to a science. Season 3 moves as smoothly as Dexter's knives and you will crave more and more! 4 1/2 slates out of 5! Can't wait for Season 4!!  - reviewed by Min

EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS: The Fourth Season    Street Date: August 18, 2009                                                 Actors: Tyler Williams, Terry Crews                                             Genre: Comedy/Family

REVIEW - This is the final season of the show from Chris Rock and the pace seems rushed compared to previous seasons.  Probably because they knew the end was coming and they wanted to wrap things up.  It's loaded with extras that are fun to watch.                3.5 out of 5 slates.

THE LOVE BOAT:  Second Season Volume 2

Street Date:
August 4, 2009                                                                                        Actors: Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange                    Genre: Comedy, Romance

REVIEW - I have to admit, I always enjoy The Love Boat...it's just a fun show!  This second half of the second season includes 12 episodes on a four disc set.  Look for a boat load of guest stars including Raymond Burr, Bob Denver, Peter Lawford and even Dennis Cole, who was a past guest on On Screen & Beyond.  Just sit back, relax and enjoy!   4 out of 5 slates!

 EARLY EDITION: The Second Season

Street Date:
July 28, 2009                                                  Actors: Kyle Chandler, Fisher Stevens                           Genre: Drama

REVIEW -  Early Edition is a fun show and Kyle Chandler is very well cast in the part of Gary Hobson.  I never watched the show in it's original '97/'98 Season 2 run on TV, but I really enjoyed watching it for the first time.  The characters had chemistry and the stories were engaging with drama and a little humor added by Gary's friend.  Check this one out for some entertaining viewing.  4 out of 5 slates.

THIS AMERICAN LIFE: Season 2

Street Date: July 28, 2009                                            Actors:  Ira Glass                                                                  Genre: Documentary

REVIEW - This is a hard show to classify, it's doesn't come from the same cookie-cutter mold as most TV shows come from.  It makes you think.  It's a Showtime series and not for everyone, but it looks at life through ordinary people and makes you say...wow.  3 1/2 out of 5 slates.

 HOTEL: The First Season

Street Date:
July 21, 2009                                                  Actors: James Brolin, Connie Sellecca                           Genre: Drama

REVIEW -  Hotel was a dramatic version of "The Love Boat" with lots of special guest stars, good storylines and well acted.  This set includes the original pilot episode which featured Legendary screen star Bette Davis as the owner of the hotel, who was replaced due to illness for the rest of the series run by another screen star Anne Baxter as her sister-in-law.  It gets 4 out of 5 slates.

THE LUCY SHOW: The Official 1st Season               Street Date: July 21, 2009                                                   Actors: Lucille Ball, Vivian Vance                                         Genre: Comedy

REVIEW - Lucille Ball had another hit on her hands when she did this show.  She brought Vivian Vance along with her, keeping her audience happy with their great chemistry together.  Some of the supporting cast doesn't hold up as well with their weak acting, but Lucy makes up for it and this is still a classic comedy!  Lucy was a master at the sight gag!     5 out of 5 slates.

 MATLOCK: Season 3

Street Date: July 14, 2009                                        Actors:  Andy Griffith, Linda Purl                                           Genre: Crime, Drama

REVIEW - Here comes another season of Matlock.  I actually like this season covering the 1989 - 1990 season, better than the previous (even though I liked that one also) of this Andy Griffith outing.  He seems more settled in the role.  This set comes with 5 discs with a 15 hour 53 minute runnning time and 20 episodes!  3 1/2 out of 5 slates.

PETTICOAT JUNCTION: The Official Second Season

Street Date:
July 7, 2009                                                  Actors: Bea Benaderet, Edgar Buchanan                      Genre: Comedy, TV

REVIEW -  Season 2 of this fun series comes your way with a bunch of episodes that are sure to tickle your funnybone.  Kate and the girls make their guest feel at home while Uncle Joe is always looking for a way to make a buck and get out of work, usually with comical results.  Look for some familiar guest stars, including the gentleman who was the voice of George Jetson!  It gets 4 out of 5 slates.

 The Cleaner: Season One

Street Date: June 9, 2009                                                 Actors: Benjamin Bratt, Grace Park                                             Genre: Drama

REVIEW - The Cleaner is about a team of people who help addicts when they finally realize they are in need of help, while struggling with their own past.  Lead by a former addict, played by Benjamin Bratt, this is a solid show with interesting plots and a certain grittiness about it.  Worth checking out!  3.5 out of 5 slates.

Perry Mason: The Fourth Season - Volume 1          Street Date: June 9, 2009                                                   Actors: Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale                                     Genre: Crime, Drama, TV

REVIEW - Another impressive release of Perry Mason makes it's way to DVD!  More court room drama with the lawyer who has a reputation for sometimes pushing the limits of the law to find the truth.  Keep an eye out for some actors in their early careers, showing up as guest stars on the show, such as Robert Reford. 5 out of 5 slates.

 Cannon: Season Two, Volume One

Street Date: June 2, 2009                                                 Actors: William Conrad                                                          Genre: Drama, Mystery, TV

REVIEW - It's good to see Cannon back with another Season on DVD.  This 1972 season picks up with more great episodes of a top-notch show.  William Conrad seems so well implanted into the character of Cannon, it's easy to see why he was chosen for the role.   3.5 out of 5 slates.

REVIEW - Julie, Pete and Linc return to finish off the second season of TV's hippest cop show.  It's a great look into an era , this was released in the 1971 - 1972 season, when teens every where flocked around the TV to see this show.  Great storylines make this one a winner!   4 out of 5 slates.

REVIEW - It's been 5 months since Season 3 Vol 1 came out and I only wish they would bring the 2nd half of a season out sooner when they split the season up like this.  But, the wait is worth it and Gunsmoke contuinues to deliver great family western action with Marshall Dillon and the rest in Dodge City!     4 1/2 out of 5 slates.

REVIEW - Season 2 of Sister Sister made Tia and Tamera household names across America.  Tim Reid and Jackee Harry made a solid backup cast for the girls, making for a funny show geared mosre toward teens, but still a lot of laughs.   3 1/2 out of 5 slates.

REVIEW - Penn & Teller have always been known for their humor and this series, season 6, brings it out in spades!  Confronting many different issues, they, well he, speaks his mind on each and everyone.  You may not agree with his point of view, but they do present it in a different manner than most.   3 1/2 out of 5 slates.

REVIEW -   Season 2 of "Jake & The Fatman" moves from LA to Hawaii with a solid season premier episode and continues throughout the season with quality shows.  I don't know if it was the move to the clean air in Hawaii or what, but this season, the show jumped up a notch.      4 out of 5 slates!

Actors: Peter Graves, Greg Morris                          Genre: Action, Crime, Mystery, Drama
REVIEW -   A classic show all around!  Mission Impossible Season 6 brings you more of the elaborate missons the show was famous for.  William Shatner guest stars on one of the episodes which is particularly well planned out.  Not as many explosions as the recent movies with Tom Cruise, but better executed.     4 out of 5 slates!

REVIEW - In 1996-1997 the lies and loves of that famous zip code continued.  As I said with the last release, I had never watched the show, but you are easily drawn into the lives of these characters...how can such a small group of people have so many problems, conflict, decieit, lies and so on?  Answer...good writers!  4 out of 5 slates!

REVIEW - David Janseen keeps on running for another half season!  For those of you not old enough to remember this show, think "The Hulk" with Bill Bixby or "Nowhere Man" with Bruce Greenwood.  This was the original show to have the hero on the run in show after show and it did it right!  Top notch TV with some excellent guest stars who went on to huge fame in later years.    4 1/2 out of 5 slates!

REVIEW - True life animal adventures, attacks and more!  Very interesting collectilon of stories, some of animals in the wild (the mother bear looking for her cub in a suburb) and others of animals in cages (a captive Cobra biting a man and his efforts to be treated before the poison kills him).  Sometimes heartwretching and other times heartwarming (saving a deer from drowning).  This makes for intriguing viewing!    4 out of 5 slates!

 FAMILY TIES:  The Fifth Season
Street Date:
March 10, 2009                                                 Actors: Michael J Fox, Justine Bateman, Michael Gross     Genre: Comedy
REVIEW - Michael J Fox showed his talent for comic timing on this show.  A strong cast, good sitcom stories and a poke at the era made this a show to watch.  They could have keyed on Fox and killed the show early (even with his talent, too much of the same thing is not good), instead, during this season, each cast member had a turn to lead the storyline, making it a true ensemble efort...and yes, Fox still shined bright!   Be sure to check out the "Gag reel" extras.     4 1/2 out of 5 slates!

CAROLINE IN THE CITY:  Season Two                        Street Date: March 10, 2009                                         Actors:  Lea Thompson, Malcolm Gets, Eric Lutes Genre: Comedy
REVIEW - Caroline in the city lacked any real spark on the show.  It wasn't a bad show, but it didn't have anything that pushed it into the spotlight.  There are some funny episodes and no real extras, other than the episode promos.   3 out of 5 slates.

7th HEAVEN: The Eighth Season
Street Date: March 3, 2009
Actors: Rachel Blanchard, Stephen Collins, Catherine Hicks, Beverly Mitchell                                                                                 Genre: Drama, Family, TV

REVIEW - This time, the 2003-2004 season comes your way for 7th Heaven and it is as good as ever and there are more seasons to come.  This show is a rare one, showing strong family values, but not shying away from modern issues.  This is a relatively quick release, which I'm sure is appreciated by fans.   4 out of 5 slates!

RETURN OF THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Street Date: March 3, 2009                                  Actors: Robert Vaughn, David McCallum                    Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller

REVIEW - In 1983, years after the show went of the air, they were brought back for another mission.  This TV movie was not as good as the show was, but it is still an interesting watch.  David McCullum does most of the work, as in the series, while Vaughn plays the debonair spy who gets the girl.  Look for an appearance of  a certain other spy referred to as "JB"!    4 out of 5 slates!

 NASH BRIDGES:  The Second  Season
Street Date:
March 3, 2009                                       Actors: Don Johnson, Cheech Marin                              Genre: Drama

REVIEW - Don Johnson and Cheech Marin are a good match in this 1997 season show.  The episodes are engaging and they both add a bit of humor to their roles to offset the drama.  Good solid show.       4 out of 5 slates!

GIRLFRIENDS: The Sixth Season

Street Date: February 24, 2009                              Actors:  Golden Brooks, Persia White, Jill Marie Jones Genre: Comedy
REVIEW - I found this to be a rather uneven show with low production values and a very odd (annoying) laughtrack.   The stories are not bad and it grows on you as you watch the series, but we can still only give it 3 out of 5 slates.

SABRINA, THE TEENAGE WITCH:  The 5th Season

Street Date: February 17, 2009                                        Actors:  Melissa Joan Hart, Caroline Rhea                               Genre: Family
REVIEW - In this season, Sabrina sets out to college, which can prove rough on a teen witch!  Based on the "Archie" comics spin-off, it makes for good viewing for the kids.  Look for TV "Punky Brewster" as Sabrina's roommate.  No extras in this set.    3 1/2 out of 5 slates.

THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES:  The Official 3rd  Season
Street Date:
February 17, 2009                         Actors: Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas Genre: Comedy

REVIEW - It's corny, but it's a lot of fun, what more can I say!  Be sure to watch the extra "The Legend of the Beverly Hillbillies".  If you have seen this show before, watch the extra first to get you in the mood for the show, it's a great nostalgia piece with host Mac Davis and some of the original cast in character, from 1993.       4 out of 5 slates!

TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: The First Season

Street Date: February 10, 2009                 Actors:  Various Guest Stars                                           Genre: Horror, Fantasy
REVIEW - George Romero tried to bring back "Night Gallery", "Twilight Zone", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and ended up with a valiant attempt that fell short.  Some episodes in this season are top notch while others miss the boat.  Worth watching, but expect sporadic results.  Look for many good guest stars, some in early performances.       3 out of 5 slates.

FRIDAY THE 13th The Series:   Season 2

Street Date:
February 10, 2009                               Actors: John D Lemay, Louise Robey                         Genre: Horror, Mystery
REVIEW - Friday The 13th The Series tried to bring horror to television...what it brought was an attempt that looked more like a horror version of the kids tv show, "Power Rangers".  Unless you are under 10 years old, the only scary thing about this show was the bad production values and even worse acting!               2 out of 5 slates!

MELROSE PLACE:  The Fifth Season Volume 1

Street Date:
February 10, 2009                       Actors: Heather Locklear, Marcia Cross                         Genre: Soap Opera, Drama

REVIEW - Ok...here is another one of those shows, back in 1996-97, that I never watched.  So I sat down to review it, trying to keep an open mind (Soap Opera...yeeech) and found I was drawn into the stories.  Not bad!  Betrayal, murder, blackmail!  The cast is loaded with people who have gone onto more recent things, including two stars of "Desperate Housewives", "Swingtown" and more!     4 out of 5 slates!

DAVE'S WORLD: Season 2

Street Date: February 3, 2009                                        Actors:  Harry Anderson, Shadoe Stevens                               Genre: Comedy
REVIEW - Harry Anderson played Dave on this series and came up with a "quite hit", one of those shows that didn't get a lot of press, but was good and lasted for four seasons.  It features a solid supporting cast with Shadoe Stevens, Meshach Taylor and DaLane Matthews in this 1994-95 season.  Fun bits!  Check it out!   3 1/2 out of 5 slates.

Click here to listen to our interview with Shadoe Steves who played "Kenny" on "Dave's World"!

BECKER: Season 2

Street Date: February 3, 2009                                        Actors:  Ted Danson                                                          Genre: Comedy
REVIEW - This is not Ted Danson's best work, but still a fun series.  He is not a lovable character, like he was on "Cheers", in this 1999-2000.  It's a 3 disc set with 24 episodes.    3 out of 5 slates.

 THE INVADERS:  The Second Season

Street Date:
January 27, 2009                                                 Actors: Roy Thinnes                                                  Genre: Sci-Fi
REVIEW - Here is a Sci-Fi show that ended before it should have.  It was another one of those 60's Quinn Martin Productions that was well written, but still ended to soon.  The guest star line-up in this set is chock full of well known stars from that time and many people who later became big stars.  There is commentary from Roy Thinnes before each episode, where he points out interseting facts.   A total of 1336 minutes of Sci-Fi fun!  4 1/2 out of 5 slates!

 CHEERS:  The Final Season

Street Date:
January 27, 2009                                                 Actors: Ted Danson, Kelsey Grammer, Kirstey Alley                   Genre: Comedy

REVIEW - This DVD set of the final season of Cheers is great, but it doesn't have the usual liner notes inside the DVD.  It just has the disc episode list on the back, but it's whats inside that counts.  Cheers was a great show, that may have went a season or to longer than it should have, but it ended it style.  The last episode was a great way to end the series..."Sorry, we're closed."  Classic.   4 1/2 out of 5 slates!

THE LOVE BOAT:  Second Season Volume 1

Street Date:
January 27, 2009                                                                           Actors: Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange                    Genre: Comedy, Romance

REVIEW - The Love Boat was and still is a great bit of escapism.  Don't look for thought provoking television, this DVD just gives you a chance to kick back and forget about all the problems going on and relax.  It's a fun time with the Captain, Issac, Julie, Doc, Gopher and the bevy of guest stars that made up the show.  It's a great DVD to add to your collection.   4 out of 5 slates!

MY THREE SONS:  Season 1 Volume 2

Street Date:
January 20, 2009                                 Actors: Fred MacMurray, William Frawley, Don Grady                  Genre: Family Comedy

REVIEW - The fun continues with the second part of this TV Classic's Season 1.  My Three Sons Season 1, Volume 2 continues the lives of the Douglas family led by Fred MacMurray as Steve Douglas and his three sons, Mike, Robbie and Chip.  Each episode has a moral and words of wisdom for the boys as they move through life without a mother (we have no idea what happened to her!), which makes for great family viewing.  4 out of 5 slates.

Click here to listen to our podcast episode 31 which features an interview with Don Grady who played Robbie Douglas on the show!

THIS AMERICAN LIFE: Season 1

Street Date: January 20, 2009                                        Actors:  Ira Glass                                                                 Genre: Documentary, Comedy

REVIEW - This show does a good job of showing different sides of life in America, and always thought provoking.  This was a Showtime series, so many people many not have seen it unless they subscribe to Showtime.  If you have a chance, check it out if you like documentary style shows.  3 1/2 out of 5 slates.

WALKER TEXAS RANGER: Season 6

Street Date: January 13, 2009                                        Actors:  Chuck Norris, Clarence Gilyard                                          Genre: Action, Crime, Drama

REVIEW - Walker Texas Ranger is a good series, reminicent of the 70's type cop shows.  Chuck gets to show his karate skills in each episode as he whoops the bad guys, but the part of the series that really throws me for a loop is his ability in some of the shows to "communicate with animals"...that goes a little to far for me, for a cop show.  Other than that it's a good show, but...  3 out of 5 slates.

 MATLOCK: Season 2

Street Date: January 13, 2009                                        Actors:  Andy Griffith, Linda Purl                                           Genre: Crime, Drama

REVIEW - One of America's most loved TV  actors, Andy Griffith, played the title role in this series.  This was the 2nd season, covering the 87'-88' time period.  The show was well written and had some good stories.  Griffith was slowing down by this time and a lot of the "action" was done by his assistants, but he lead them through the trials and all ends well in each episode.  Enjoyable viewing.  3 1/2 out of 5 slates.

 MANNIX:  Season 2

Street Date:
January 6, 2009                                                    Actors: Mike Connors, Gail Fisher                                              Genre: Crime

REVIEW - Most 60's Cop shows were a lot alike...well written and executed...and Mannix was no exception.  He was a tough cookie with a soft center, helping others who were in trouble and always getting his man, with a few fist fights thrown in for good measure.  Gail Fisher joined the cast for the duration of the series and did an excellent job in the roll.  This is a well done set, but sorry no extras. 4 out of 5 slates!

 DUCKMAN:  Season 3 & 4

Street Date:
January 6, 2009                                                    Actors: Jason Alexander                                                         Genre: Animation, Comedy, TV

REVIEW - Put the kids to bed!  This is not for the kids!  Even though it was produced by the peolpe that brought "The Rugrats" to the kiddies,  "Duckman" was definitley for the adults...and it worked.  This USA Network late night show is a barrel of laughs and mocks life with a duck who salivates over women and is very un-PC.  Good for laughs!  4 out of 5 slates!

PETTICOAT JUNCTION: The Official First Season

Street Date:
December 16, 2008                                                    Actors: Bea Benaderet, Edgar Buchanan                                  Genre: Comedy, TV

REVIEW - Paul Henning, the creator of "The Beverly Hillbillies", started this series in 1963 and immediately had another hit on his hands.  Petticoat Junction is another classic TV show that people have been waiting to show up on DVD.  It's a very simple show, but the stories are interesting, funny and enjoyable.  You'll even see "Sam Drucker" the general store owner, played by veteran character actor Frank Cady, who also appeared on "Green Acres" a few years later.  The DVD has many extras, including interviews and intro's by two of the daughters on the show, which make for interesting viewing for those of you who enjoy going behind the scenes.  It's a 5 disc set with 38 episodes and a lot of fun to watch.  It gets 4 out of 5 slates.  All Aboard!

 SWINGTOWN: The First Season

Street Date:
December 9, 2008                                                    Actors: Grant Show, Molly Parker, Jack Davenport, Trina Decker      Genre: Drama

REVIEW - Swingtown was a summertime show this past year (2008) and stirred up quite a bit of controversy before it aired.  In the end, there is less bedhopping in this series than on any daytime soap or season of "90210" (new or old series)!  Ultimately, this turns out to be a pretty good show with sub plots and twists and turns like any other prime time soap, they just took a different angle that hadn't been used yet.  Set in 1976, during the Disco era, it makes for some amusing viewing with the clothes and the general style of the sets and props.  It has some extra features on the DVD and the only downside is that, being a summer filler, it only has 13 episodes.  Will there be a 2nd season?  Stay tuned!

 HAPPY DAYS: The Fourth Season

Street Date:
December 9, 2008                                              Actors: Ron Howard, Henry Winkler                                         Genre: Comedy, TV

REVIEW - In 1976, Happy Days was in it's 4th season and going strong.  Richie, Fonzie, Mr & Mrs C, Ralph and Potsie all made this a great show.  This season also introduced Al, who was taking over Arnold's.  Season 4 was before the time when the show focused on Fonzie and each cast member had at least one episode in the spotlight with Fonzie there to help when needed.  The 3rd Anniversary Show is included as a special feature.  Happy Days was a fond and funny look back at the 50's and we give it 4 out of 5 slates!  Aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Click here to listen to episode 33 with a interview with Don Most who played "Ralph Malph" on "Happy Days".

RAWHIDE: The Third Season - Volume 2

Street Date: December 9, 2008                                              Actors: Eric Flemming, Clint Eastwood                                       Genre: Western, Classic, Adventure, TV

REVIEW -This 4 disc set of Rawhide spans the 2nd part of the 3rd season of the series, Feb. 1961 thru June 1961 and has a whopping 779 minutes of western fun and adventure. It features a young Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates. Each episode includes a nice dose of drama and a side helping of light-hearted comedy. The cast works well together and seem to be having fun, while not taking themselves too seriously. For those of you hoping for some DVD extras, sorry, none here, but this is still a good DVD set! Head 'em up, move 'em out! 4 out of 5 slates.

GUNSMOKE: The Third Season - Volume 1

Street Date: December 9, 2008                                    Actors: James Arness, Amanda Blake, Milburn Stone                      Genre: Action, Western, TV

REVIEW - As Gunsmoke moved into it's 3rd season in 1957, it had firmly placed itself as a solid hit in the era of TV westerns. Matt Dillion was one tough Marshall and it was a good thing...each episode had at least one person waving a gun, causing trouble in Dodge. The stories are all well written and loaded with suspense. You can easily see why this was one of TV's longest running shows. The 3 disc set is loaded with 19 episodes, that is more than some shows today have in a full season, and this is only the first half of the 3rd season! The packaging is pretty standard, I only wish they would put a photo on the discs instead of the simple gray disc with the show title in silver, it would make the product more appealing. There is not much for extras other than a few Sponsor Spots on the 3rd disc which are fun to watch. This is a good solid DVD release of a top notch show and we give it 4.5 out of 5 slates.

Perry Mason: The Third Season - Volume 2

Street Date: December 2, 2008                                             Actors: Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale                                               Genre: Crime, Drama, TV

REVIEW - Perry Mason ran from 1957 to 1966 with over 270 episodes, a very impressive run. I like the way he always handled the people on the witness stand. He was the attorney's attorney! This release is so clear and crisp, that I am sure that for people who watched the show when it was first aired, it will be like watching a different show! No more fuzzy picture because of the rabbit ears! But seriously, they have done a great job with the transfer to DVD and I can't wait for them to release more seasons of the show. Classic TV at its best! 5 out of 5 slates.

Jake and the Fatman: Season 1, Volume 2

Street Date: December 2, 2008                                             Actors: William Conrad, Joe Penny                                                                                 Genre: Crime, Drama, TV

REVIEW - In the late 80's William Conrad returned to another long running series, Jake and the Fatman. He plays J.L. "Fatman" McCabe and he is a district attorney in LA this time around. Again, he dosen't move much, but with the help of his assistant DA, Derek Mitchell (Alan Campbell) and a speciial investigator, Jake Styles (Joe Penny), they fight to rid the streets of crime. There is still plenty of action in this set and it's fun to see the interaction between Conrad and Penny's characters. We give it 3 out of 5 slates.

 Cannon: Season One, Volume Two

Street Date: December 2, 2008                                          Actors: William Conrad                                                          Genre: Drama, Mystery, TV

REVIEW - Ex-cop, turned private investigator, Frank Cannon, played by William Conrad (know for being a narrator in many shows over the years including "The Fugitive", "Rocky & Bullwinkle" and "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century"), was not you typical PI. He loved food and his size showed that fact. Don't expect to see him running down the street chasing bad guys! No way! This series was another Quinn Martin Production, well written and acted and it lasted for 120 episodes from 1971 to 1976. This was one of those "quite" hits that just kept moving along year after year and starred a veteran actor who was a class act. 3.5 out of 5 slates.

The Mod Squad: The Second Season, Volume 1

Street Date: November 25, 2008                                          Actors: Michael Cole, Peggy Lipton, Clarence Williams III              Genre: Action, Crime Drama, TV

REVIEW - Most cop shows can play twenty, thirty, even forty years later and other than the hairstyles and clothes, dosen't seem dated to the viewer. The Mod Squad is the opposite. It is very dated with the hip language and clothes, but that was the appeal of the show even back in the late 60's when it originally aired. It was supposed to be going against the grain. The episodes are well written, intriguing and fun to watch. Pete, Julie and Linc were the coolest back then and still are, even with the lovebeads and flower power. Enjoy the trip back in time! Peace! 4 out of 5 slates.

Beverly Hills 90210: The Sixth Season

Street Date: November 25, 2008                                          Actors:  : Jennie Garth, Brian Astin Green, Luke Perry, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Ian Ziering                           Genre: Drama, Soap, TV

REVIEW - I must admit right from the start I was never a fan of this show. Never watched it, didn't care too. But as a reviewer I am obligated to sit down and watch everthing and I must say, it took several episodes, but after watching them , I can see why this was such a big hit with fans. It plays more like a daytime soap than the likes of Dynasty, which played things over the top which added to its appeal, not taking it's self to seriously. I liked watching Dylan's obsessive pursuit of his father's killer. Fans of the show will love it and if others give it a chance they will enjoy it too. I'm still not a big fan, but it is interesting viewing once you get into it. 3 out of 5 slates.

Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.: The Final Season

Street Date: November 25, 2008                                          Actors:  Jim Nabors, Frank Sutton, Ronnie Schell                           Genre: Comedy, TV

REVIEW -Even though this show was made in the 60's, it still supplies plenty of laughs. Jim Nabors plays the innocent gas station attendent from Mayberry. North Carolina (it was a spin-off of The Andy Griffith Show) who joins the Marines and his life with his tough sergeant, played by the Frank Sutton. They were a great team on the show and this, their final season, had some memorable shows which will make for another fine addition of classic TV from the 1960's for you collection. Shazam! 4 out of 5 slates.

Star Trek: The Original Series: Season Three Remastered

Street Date: November 18, 2008                                          Actors:  William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy                                    Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, TV

REVIEW - Almost twenty two and a half hours of the original Sci-Fi classic with newly added CGI special effects makes this a sure winner! Even the packaging is cool! As an added bonus, this set includes the original pilot episode "The Cage". Some people may have a problem with the studio "touching up" the show by adding CGI effects, but you have to admit, no matter how die-hard a fan you maybe, it does look good. The space scenes look sharper, the planets look real, even the Enterprise gets a touch up. The added CGI aside, it's still the original Star Trek and one of the best classic Sci-Fi TV shows of all time! Live long and prosper! (Spock)

Hawaii Five-O: The Fifth Season                                      Street Date: November 18, 2008                                             Actors:  Jack Lord, James MacArthur, Kam Fong                           Genre: Action, Drama, TV

REVIEW - This DVD collection offers over a whopping twenty hours of viewing pleasure for fans of no-nonsense police action dramas. Jack Lord plays Steve McGarrett, the head of an elite police task force set in Hawaii, tough job, but someone has to do it! Lord's take on his character was very much in the vain of Jack Webb on Dragnet, very dry and hard nosed, and it works. Good storylines with beautiful Hawaiian backdrops and one of the best theme songs in TV history, makes for an enjoyable series. Book 'em, Danno!

Odd Couple: The Final Season                                     Street  Date: November 18, 2008                                          Actors: Jack Klugman, Al Molinaro, Tony Randall                         Genre: Comedy, TV

REVIEW -When you watch enough TV, you can eventually tell who produces a series just by the look of the show. This had Garry Marshall written all over it and it was another hit for him, but how could he have gone wrong with the talents of Jack Klugman and Tony Randall. Even in this 5th and final season, these two actors had so much chemistry together. For those of you not familar with the series, or too young to have seen it, think "Two And A Half Men" minus the son and the heavy sexual references. This show is a lot of fun with Klugman as the slob and Randall as the neat freak, two class acts on a classic TV show!

Streets of San Francisco: Season Two, Volume Two
Release  Date :November11,
2008                                                                                         Actors: Michael Douglas, Karl Malden                                                                 Year: 1973-1974                                                                                                    Genre: Action, Drama                                                                                          Review - The Streets of San Francisco was our first real look at Michael               Douglas, son of Kirk Douglas, on a regular basis.  In Season one he was                          introduced and in this Season he continued to grow.  This show was a                       no-nonsense, action packed police drama.  Each episode has a well told                        story which was a trademark of Quinn Martin productions in the 60's and                    70's and Karl Malden and Michael Douglas made a great team on the                      show.  The transfer to DVD doesn't look dated like some shows, except                 where they used stock footage, example - a fire truck scene on one                       show - it's very grain and looks so bad, but then again, it was bad in                      1973!  There is no bonus material included, but overall, The Streets of                      San Francisco is a great cop show and Malden and Douglas are top notch                      in their roles.

 7th Heaven: The Seventh Season
Street Date: November 11, 2008
Actors: Rachel Blanchard, Stephen Collins, Catherine Hicks, Beverly Mitchell                                                                                 Genre: Drama, Family, TV

REVIEW - Now that there are so many things to watch on TV, we tend to watch the same type of shows we are comfortable with and miss out on some very good programs. For me, this was one of them. I never watched this show and after watching it for my review, I must say, this is an excellent show! The storylines are well written, the acting is believable and the characters are likeable. I, for one, will be looking at the earlier seasons to find how the family progressed to point in their lives that they are during this season. At first I was a little confused as which characters were family and which were boyfriends, girlfriends, etc, but halfway through the first show, I was catching on to who was who (including the chimp!). We highly recommend this compelling show to any DVD collection.

THE WILD WILD WEST - The Complete Series                                                                                 Street  Date: November 4, 2008
Actors:
Charles Aidman, Robert Conrad, Michael Dunn, Roy Engel, Douglas Henderson, Ross Martin
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, TV, Western

REVIEW -In the 1960's James Bond first came to the Big Screen and TV jumped on the bandwagon...big time. It was loaded with spy shows like "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.", "The Avengers", "Get Smart" and many more. The "Wild Wild West" was no exception, but it took a different twist on the genre... It was set in the 1800's. James West and Artemus Gordon were two special agents who worked for President Grant and they had more tricks, gadgets and disguises than Bond and Batman ever had! Even McGiver would have been impressed! This is a great complete series set with special packaging, booklet and case. It comes with special features and a bonus disc with two made for TV movies made after the show left the air. Each episode has one or more special guest star (It was hard to take Harvey Korman seriously as a Baron...I kept thinking Carol Burnett and Tim Conway were going to pop into the scene!) they even had a young Richard Pryor on the show! This makes a nice addition to any DVD collection if you like action adventure and alot of fun!

JAG: The Seventh Season - Review

Street Date: November 4, 2008
Actors: Catherine Bell, Patrick Labyorteaux, John M. Jackson, Chuck Carrington, Scott Lawrence
Genre: Action, Drama, TV
Synopsis: JAG (Judge Advocate General) is an elite legal branch of military officers trained as lawyers who investigate, prosecute and defend those accused of crimes in the military, including murder, treason and terrorism. Navy Cmdr. Harmon "Harm" Rabb, an ace pilot turned lawyer, and Marine Lt. Col. Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie, a beautiful and strictly by-the-book officer, are colleagues, both with similar high standards, that often find themselves clashing with one another as they take different routes to solve cases.

REVIEW - This is one of those shows that was not a monster hit making the news all the time, but it was a constant "quiet" hit every year. Each episode is a good, solid hour of entertainment, filled with action and drama. The first episode in this season 7 set, "Adrift", is part two of the last episode of season 6, so it could be a little confusing unless you have seen that cliffhanger episode, but it still is a show that draws you in. There are 24 episodes in this set, each stands on it's own, but they also continue to piece together the lives of Harm and Mac. If you haven't seen JAG before, this is a good season to get and if your a longtime fan, it's one more season to enjoy!

 THE 4400 - Review

Street Date:October 28, 2008
Actors:Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Laura Allen, Billy Campbell, Peter Coyote,
Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi, TV

Synopsis:Over the last century, thousands of people have gone missing. Suddenly and inexplicably, 4400 missing people are returned, all at once, exactly as they were on the day they vanished. Unclear what this world-altering event means, the government investigates the 4400 to piece together where they've been and why they've been returned. It quickly becomes apparent that their presence will change the human race in ways no one could have foreseen.

REVIEW-Having never seen this series when it originally aired, I didn't know what to expect, but after watching the pilot episode I was hooked and never lost interest through the whole set. If you mixed "The X-Files", "Heros" and "Dark Skies" together, this is what you'd get, action, good Sci-Fi and an interesting storyline! Each episode weaves the lives of members of the 4400 together and the investigating team keeping an eye on them. It also has a bonus disc with extras for those of you who enjoy going beyond the series itself!

Dynasty: Season 3 Volume 2                                            Street Date: October 21, 2008                                               Actors:  Joan Collins, Linda Evans, John Forsythe, Heather Locklear                                                                                    Genre: Drama, Soap,TV

REVIEW - Dynasty, half the acting was way over the top and the other half was extremely bad! The show featured high drama with music to accent the important parts, just in case you didn't know it was important. But, with all the things wrong with the show, it was and still is, one of America's guilty pleasures! Heather Locklear plays Sammi Jo, one of the meanest witches of television history, probably second only to Joan Collins as Alexis. This season has poisonings, blackmail, cat fights, bed hopping, betrayl and that's just the tip of the iceberg! Get it, watch it and continue to deny you enjoy it!

MY THREE SONS - The First Season Volume One

Street Date:September 30, 2008
Actors: Fred MacMurray, Don Grady, Stanley Livingston Genre: Comedy,TV
Review: Relive the fun of this series, that was one of the longest running TV shows in history. The transfer to DVD is great, making for a vivid picture of a classic black & white TV family show. My Three Sons was not the "picture perfect" family of the late 60's TV, such as the Bradys. Not so "tongue-in-cheek". Not only is this a slice of life from early TV sitcoms, but it's fun to watch. The only downside to the set is, they printed the episode listing on the back of the DVD cover and you can see it through the clear case, but the DVD's cover this unless you take the DVD's out of the case. A minor thing, but for those of you who like easy viewing of the episode list, this may be a small issue. Overall, this is a keeper, a real "gem" and a welcome addition to any DVD collection of classic TV!
